Women in the Media

Women in the media are portrayed as over sexualized objects and it's not okay. The media says that it's because the people demand it but the only reason why people demand it is because the media have manipulated society into thinking that women are nothing but objects for sex. Typically in movies women hold no major roles and if they do hold major roles it's because they are looking for love with some man. Men are always at the center of the movies even if the movie seems to have a female lead if you look a little deeper it's the man who makes up a huge part of the plot and character development. And in movies with badass female superheroes the female characters are hypersexualized and put into overly sexualized positions.
For its own part, the WMC’s annual examination found that, at 20 of the nation’s top news outlets, men produced 62.3 percent of news reports analyzed during a studied period while women produced 37.7 percent of news reports. That WMC “Divided 2017” analysis showed hardly any progress since the WMC’s previous “Divided” report, when women produced 37.3 percent of news. Additionally, in the broadcast news sector alone, work by women anchors, field reporters and correspondents actually declined, falling to 25.2 percent of reports in 2016 from 32 percent when the WMC published its 2015 “Divided” report.
We act like the role of women in the media has in creased but in reality it hasn't, men still dominate the industry. I asked myself how can men write, direct, and decide how a women acts if they aren't women and most have little experience with average women? The answer is they can't, all they do is portray women how they see fit, how they want their perfect girl.
As a female I hate how women in the media are portrayed but the only two ways to fix this hypersexualization is one, not to buy content with women portrayed as such, and two, for women to somehow find themselves a higher percentage of involvement in the media. It's not okay for a 7 year old girl to hate her body because it's not like the body she sees on TV, or in the magazines, we can't let more and more generations of kids be affected by such a thing. As same with boys, if all they see is women being portrayed as objects they will grow to belief as such and treat women with no respect. The only way to stop this is to stop the demand in the media for such a thing.
To the media women with nice bodies are brainless sluts and women who hold some power are moody and bi***y wives. When women hold power people always question whether they are taking care of their kids and houses but when a man holds power no one questions him instead they congratulate him for providing for his family. Women in the media either to much brain or to little no one is ever happy with what they have. What message is that sending out to young girls? That no matter what they do they aren't good enough. And no child should have to constantly hear that they aren't good enough, it lowers their self-esteem making them more prone to depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses as well as eating disorders.
In conclusion, women are not correctly portrayed in the media and in turn are ruining the lives of many young girls and their dreams.

  1. As we saw in Miss Representation, women are also edited, making their waists smaller and their eyes larger. Creating an even harder standard to meet.
